2010 Summer Fling - Christchurch
2010 was a very successful Summer School this year attracting 165 participants (10 observers and 155 dancers). Numbers being well up on 2009 with some classes numbering well in the 30’s. This year we had dancers and observers from all of New Zealand including Auckland, Wellington, Hawkes Bay, New Plymouth, Tauranga, Blenheim, Timaru, Oamaru, Ashburton and Invercargill.
This year our Tutors were Mrs Sherilyn Hall, Mrs Robyn Simmons, and Miss Sara Simmons, with Mrs Julie Hawke taking two extra classes due to large numbers. This year we also used two senior dancers who are Balmoral Club members. Miss Kate Wills took the Junior Fun Class and Miss Jeana Wheeler tutored a new class of Junior Dancers. This class was for two days only and covered the Highland Fling and Irish Jig only.
Both the junoir and senior fun classes also continue to be very popular with each new tutor taking a different approach each year. Instead of a Boys only class, this year we ran a one day Shillelagh Class which proved popular with the boys and a couple of girls preparing for Irish exams.
Once again AMI Insurance donated Drink Bottles and Key Rings to present as spot prizes and also the prizes for guessing the correct number of chocolate bars consumed by the dancers over teh 4 days at Summer School. (the correct number was 570 chocolate bars and 643 incuding M&M's)
Ten $50.00 scholarships were awarded this year by the Tutors of each examination class from Initial through to Advanced (there was no scholarship for Intermediate as there was only 1 dancer in this grade who had won the scholarship the previous year so was not eligible to win this year). The Balmoral Club have chosen to award these scholarships even though Academy has been unsuccessful in getting a grant.
